Sitting Under a Black Sun is a haunting and transformative collection of poetry that takes readers on a journey through the darkest corners of the human soul. With unflinching honesty, the poems explore the raw depths of heartbreak, the suffocating weight of mental health struggles, and the overwhelming feeling of being lost in a world that feels relentlessly cold. Each verse is a glimpse into the chaos of trying to survive when the light seems dim, and the sun appears to be swallowed by darkness.
Yet amidst the agony, there is also a flicker of hope—an exploration of the resilience needed to rise from the ashes, to love despite the scars, and to find beauty even in the deepest sorrow. As the poet wrestles with inner demons and broken hearts, there emerges a quiet strength, the discovery of self-love, and the eventual possibility of connection with another soul.
Sitting Under a Black Sun is for anyone who has walked through hell, felt the unbearable weight of their own mind, or longed for love in a world full of pain. It is a collection that captures the fragile dance between despair and healing, a powerful reminder that even in our darkest moments, there is always the potential to find light again.

Sitting Under a Black Sun by S.E. Sumpter is a collection of poems that are vulnerable, dark and hopeful. I’m always impressed by creatives who are able to share such intimate parts of themselves with the world - it’s an astonishingly brave act.
Poems, like most art forms, are subjective. Not every poem in the book landed for me, but that doesn’t mean they weren’t tragic and beautiful.
There were a few, however, that made me weep. “Mother” brought back all the grief and anger from my five year fertility journey. I actually had to take a breather after finishing that piece and didn’t pick up the collection again until a few days later. If art can give me a visceral reaction like this, then I will cherish it for all of my days.

For the sake of transparency I must let you know that I know this author irl. She is lovely, eccentric and kind. That being said, my review of her poetry collection is honest and genuine. I would recommend to my followers to check out her work.
